Stemedica Cell Technologies, Inc., along with Project Concern International and Gen-Probe Incorporated, hosted a first-of-its-kind roundtable session to explore ways in which the research, nonprofit, and for-profit communities can define a role for adult stem cells in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The conference, held in March 2007 in San Diego, California, focused on addressing ways in which adult stem cells could be applied in a feasible and meaningful way in the fight to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS.

The roundtable was organized to:

  • Gather individuals and organizations from a variety of sectors and backgrounds for an in-depth discussion on the potential role of stem cells in the fight against HIV/AIDS
  • Agree on potential clinical and delivery strategies using stem cells in the prevention and/or treatment of HIV/AIDS and identify the key resources necessary to implement these efforts rapidly
  • Identify additional academic, nonprofit, for-profit, and governmental partners in this exciting undertaking

There were three specific goals for the roundtable, which addressed therapeutic, effective delivery, and cultural acceptance issues. The goals of the presentations and breakout sessions were to propose clinical strategies using stem cells as a potential treatment for HIV/AIDS, explore existing and new models for delivering potential stem cell treatments to HIV/AIDS patients, and understand factors that impact the acceptance of HIV/AIDS treatments for individuals, communities and governments.

Participation in the event was by invitation only and included key individuals from The Burnham Institute, UCSF, MIT, UCLA, UCSD, Kaunda Children's Foundation, Mildmay HIV/AIDS Health Center (Uganda), the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Project Concern International, and Power of Love Foundation, Gen-Probe, Incorporated and Stemedica Cell Technologies, Inc.

Participating organizations represented all sectors involved in identification of treating HIV/AIDS, including the Research & Academic Communities, Non-Profit Sector, and the Private Sector.
